August 2, 2016 | Bangor Daily News: In 2004, U.S. Army Staff Sergeant Mike Francis of the 133rd Combat Engineers, was serving his first tour in Mosul, Iraq. SSgt. Francis and two other soldiers received indirect fire, and all three were injured by shrapnel.

On Friday, July 29th, Francis was presented the Purple Heart by 2nd District Congressman Bruce Poliquin in a small, private ceremony at the Bangor Vets Center attended by several of the Maine soldiers Sgt. Francis served with, friends, and co-workers.
“During his three combat tours, SSgt. Francis was respected as a humble leader who always put the needs of his unit above his own,” said Congressman Poliquin. “While he didn’t seek recognition for his selfless service and the wounds of war he suffered as a result, he is very much deserving of this meaningful medal – the oldest military award that is still given. I want to thank SSgt. Francis and all Veterans for their sacrifices to keep us safe and free.”
During the last 23 years, Mike Francis has served his country with honor and distinction. He has recently retired from the Army but keeps himself very busy as the Lead CDL Instructor at Northeast Technical Institute (NTI) in Bangor, Maine. Francis’ unwavering commitment to exceeding student expectations has regularly garnered him unsolicited praise from students and staff commending his outstanding level of instructing, professionalism and commitment.
